Have you ever wondered about the history of the World Series of Poker? Well, if so, then you should definitely read this article. Many people have interest in Poker, but never really know what started the game as a sport.
The World Series of Poker began in 1970, and is a series of poker tournaments that is held each year in Las Vegas. The events of the World Series of Poker last about a month. The series finishes each year with a $10,000 No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em game.
The very first World Series of Poker took place at the Holiday Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada. This event was an invitation only event at the time. It was actually hosted by Tom Moore, but later would be handed over to Benny Binion and his family, as they were the ones who nurtured poker in casinos, and developed the security measures that had once prevented many casinos from including the game in the services they offered. The very first winner, Crandell Addington currently holds a record because he went on to finish in the top ten of the main event another eight times!
Even though the World Series of Poker did not begin officially until 1970, it can be traced further back, to around 1949. Casino owner Benny Binion saw two players face off over a period of five months, and of course, all it took were these seeds to be planted to turn the face off into something more. With that, we have seen the World Series of Poker evolve into something grand.
The 2024 World Series of Poker events will take place at the Rio Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada in June. The main events begin on May 28, and the World Series of Poker will finish up this year on July 17, 2024.
Since its dawn in the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s, the World Series of Poker has exploded into quite the cultural icon. Now we see it televised all over the ESPN cable network. It also has been the reason for the birth of several video games for popular gaming consoles, and even the personal computer.
Well, there you have it. The World Series of Poker will continue to grow and evolve as long as there are players, fans, and a Las Vegas casino to host it—and you know none of these things are going anywhere for a long time.
